A Journey to Bibémus Quarries, Cézanne’s Secret Studio

Just 15 minutes by car from Villa Amara, a charming private manor tucked away in a lush haven in Aix-en-Provence, lies a hidden gem essential to the history of modern art: the Bibémus Quarries.

A place of creation, inspiration, and silence, this ochre-hued rocky plateau became the setting for one of the most significant artistic revolutions of the 19th century. It was here, in the sun-drenched shadow of Mont Sainte-Victoire, that Paul Cézanne developed a new way of seeing and painting, an approach that would later inspire Braque, Picasso, and the entire Cubist movement.

A unique site to explore during your stay in the heart of Provence.

A Major Geological and Historical Site

Located on a high plateau approximately 6 km from the center of Aix-en-Provence, in the heart of the Grand Site Sainte-Victoire, the Bibémus Quarries are renowned for their biodiversity and breathtaking landscapes. These quarries, exploited since Roman times, provided the bright ochre-yellow stone used in many of Aix’s architectural jewels: the Town Hall, the elegant mansions of the Mazarin district, and the facades of the Cours Mirabeau.

By the end of the 19th century, quarrying activity gradually ceased. The site fell silent, abandoned by men, yet ready to become the backdrop for a pivotal transformation in the history of painting.

Cézanne at Bibémus: The Cradle of a Revolution in Art

Villa Amara - Cézanne à Bibémus le berceau d’une révolution artistique

Between 1890 and 1904, Paul Cézanne frequently visited these now-deserted quarries. Far from the bustle of the city, he found stark light, profound stillness, and above all, a landscape he would endlessly paint, reimagine, and deconstruct.

In total, 11 oil paintings and 16 watercolors emerged from this place, including works now displayed around the globe:

  • The Bibémus Quarry, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (Kansas City)
  • Mont Sainte-Victoire Seen from Bibémus, Baltimore Museum of Art

But more than the number of works, it is the artistic revolution born here that makes this site so exceptional.
At Bibémus, Cézanne broke with classical perspective: rocks became blocks, trees became lines, the mountain became volumes. He painted in color masses, simplified forms, and structured space. This was the birthplace of Cubism, a movement later pursued by Picasso and Braque.

In 1954, American art lover George Bunker purchased the site to protect it. Upon his death in 1991, he donated the quarries to the City of Aix-en-Provence under one condition: that the site remain open to the public and dedicated to celebrating Cézanne’s legacy.

Since then, the city has carefully preserved and enhanced the site. Starting in 1998, safety improvements and visitor amenities were introduced. In 2022, a major revitalization project brought educational walking trails, interpretive panels, and artistic staging, allowing visitors to explore the rich connection between the natural landscape and Cézanne’s work.

Today, the Bibémus Quarries can only be visited with a guide or through excursions organized by the Tourist Office, a thoughtful decision to preserve the integrity of the site while offering an immersive journey into Cézanne’s world.
